Connery in surprise meeting with President Bush 06 April 2001
Sir Sean Connery has revealed he had a surprise meeting with US President George W Bush.
The actor and his wife, Micheline, were visiting the White House as tourists when First Lady Laura Bush introduced them to the President.
Sir Sean described it as "a wonderful surprise."
"Suddenly, the First Lady appeared with her Scottish terrier," Sir Sean told the National Press Club in Washington.
"She was explaining how she was fitting in and everything and turned around and there was the President.
"I was very, very impressed by him. He is very up about Scotland, which was very pleasing to me.
"It was really the highlight more or less, apart from receiving the Wallace medal, of my visit.
"I invited him to Scotland to come to the Royal and Ancient to have a game but his dad is a member so, of course, he doesn't need me."
Sir Sean was speaking the day after he backed Britain's drive to calm American fears over foot-and-mouth as he received an award for his contribution to the Scottish-American community.
And today he repeated that call, saying it was more important than ever that tourists from the United States do not cancel their holidays to Britain, and Scotland in particular.
