Sir Sean Connery has stepped on to the red carpet at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
About 100 fans braved a windy night to give him a hero's welcome when he put in an appearance with wife Micheline Roquebrune.
Sir Sean, patron of the festival, was in the city for the screening of Afterlife at the UGC in Fountainpark. The visit was something of a homecoming for him as, in his words, he grew up "a very good drive, a three-wood and a pitching wedge" from the cinema. Sporting a blue blazer, grey trousers and a tan, Sir Sean, who lives in the Bahamas, again restated his support for Scottish Nationalism. He said only when Scotland achieved fiscal autonomy could it begin to foster a world-class movie industry. The 73-year-old had spent the afternoon at the cinema talking to teenagers keen to make it in the industry. As he arrived for the screening of Afterlife, he was asked whether he had any plans to return to Scotland to make a film - possibly about the controversial new Scottish Parliament building. Alluding to the fact that the Holyrood building is now nearly 10 times over budget, he replied: "It wouldn't cost them to hire me as much as it cost them for the drawings." Sir Sean's new film, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, opens in the UK on October 17. Afterlife stars Kevin McKidd, of Trainspotting fame, and tells the story of a young journalist on the verge of a major career break who learns that his mother is dying. He then takes on responsibility for his sister Roberta, who has Down's syndrome, and embarks on an emotional voyage of discovery. |
